Dr. Adrienne Youdim tells us that obesity is the leading risk factor for heart disease which is the number one killer for both men and women in the United States. “Obesity affects joints. It affects skin. It puts people at greater risk for cancer. In fact, the most common cancers in the United States, excluding tobacco-related lung disease, are associated with obesity.” The positive news is that even modest amounts of weight loss significantly improve the risk factors for these medical conditions. She also talks about how depression is a major factor with obesity and that for some patients she see’s depression worsen with significant weight loss.
